Personal
Statement
This is the text of a speech given by Mr John Price during
one of the Saturdays Assembly after have been consulted by
the half of the population of KMYS about their personal statement.
Mr John Price is the first headmaster of KMYS, and one of
the main figures during the setting up of the college.
I am a Malaysian student from Malaysia. I have always wanted
to be a doctor. I am fascinated by the workings of human body.
I think it was when I had been in the womb for seven months
that the idea first came to me. I was deeply impressed by
the teamwork of doctors and nurses who were so dedicated to
bringing me into the world. I was also fascinated by the beeping
noises from the various machines that surrounded my mother
in the delivery room and from that moment I wanted to understand
how the thing that surround us really work. Lying in my cot
I did think abut doing engineering for a few moments, but
I decided that I could make a greater contribution to my country's
future by becoming a doctor and that I would instead let the
future Tenaga scholars build the multimedia super corridor.
When I was one, our cat scratched my brother's arm and this
prompted me to think about the dangers of septicernia. There
and then I knew that I wanted to specialise in human pathology
after my first degree.
Recently,
on my work placement in a local hospital, I performed an appendectomy
on an old lady from Tanjung Malim, which is a very important
medical centre north of Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur is the
capital of Malaysia. The doctor handed over the scalpel and
told me what to do. "It is no more difficult than beheading
a chicken " he said. I have seen this done in Tanjung
Malim market, so I felt very confident about the procedure.
In fact, the doctor went off for a coffee and a cigarette,
while I performed the operation. I think the doctors like
having students form KMYS, because they know that we get lots
of 'hands on' experience in Biology class. In my three days
work placement, I deliveries 10 babies, found a cure for dengue
fever and milked the venom of a number of cobras, I did ask
if I could do a little open-heart surgery, but the doctor
said hat we were only allowed to do that on the second placement.
I
have only wanted to study in UK because it has the most prestigious
universities in the world and it has been my heartfelt dream
since childhood to graduate from Oxford. I am applying o Australia,
New Zealand, Irish and American universities as well, but
I shall definitely turn them down if they offer me a place.
In
my college, I am very sporty and active person. I am on the
College Yearbook Committee and I play a major role in the
organization of this prestigious media happening. If you read
this on any other form, it is a lie. I speak fluent Uzbek,
because at my secondary school, I was selected to be a member
of a team to visit the former Soviet Union. The Russians explained
to us the secrets of their missile technology and we then
came back to Malaysia and built an ICBM as a physics practical.
Medicine
is the career for me.
